How to avoid buying duplicate clothes.

Compare the candidate with the garment that already owns the same role in your wardrobe.

Find the competing item

Compare by likely use, not only category. A jacket and overshirt can compete for the same mild-weather occasions even if their product categories differ.

Name the meaningful change

Write down what the candidate adds: a missing function, replacement for a worn item, a deliberate uniform repeat or a genuinely different use. “I like it” does not explain the wardrobe role.

Give it a realistic calendar

Name outfits and near-term occasions. If the new and existing items need the same future wears to justify themselves, do not count those wears twice in a cost-per-wear scenario.

Choose the outcome

Classify the candidate as a gap, replacement, useful variation or skip. Repetition is not automatically wrong; the aim is to recognize it before paying.
